AI YouTube Thumbnail Generators: Price per Thumbnail Compared (2026)
Prices checked 13 Oct 2026Every number below comes from the vendor's own pricing or help page, linked at the end. We make BYSO, and it is in this comparison — so we show where other tools do more than we do, and the maths is there for you to check.
AI thumbnail tools advertise plans, credits and "up to" numbers. None of that tells you what you actually want to know: how much does one thumbnail cost me? The honest answer depends on one thing most comparisons skip — how many thumbnails you really make in a month.
01Price per thumbnail if you use the whole plan
This is the best case for every subscription: you spend every credit, every month. Annual billing where the vendor offers it, because that is the price on the pricing page.
| Tool and plan | Price | What you get | Per thumbnail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thumbfa.st Ultra | $49/mo | 500 thumbnails a month | ≈ $0.10 |
| Thumbfa.st Pro | $19/mo | 150 thumbnails a month | ≈ $0.13 |
| vidIQ Max | $39/mo, yearly | 6,000 AI credits a month; 22 per generation → 272 | ≈ $0.14 |
| BYSO, $50 pack | $50 once | 575 credits; 5 per run of 3 thumbnails | ≈ $0.15 |
| BYSO, $5 pack | $5 once | 50 credits; 5 per run of 3 thumbnails | ≈ $0.17 |
| vidIQ Boost | $16.58/mo, yearly | 2,000 AI credits a month → 90 generations | ≈ $0.18 |
| Pikzels Premium | $28/mo, yearly | 18,000 credits a year; 10–20 per thumbnail | $0.19–0.37 |
| Thumbn Pro | $50/mo | 150 images a month | ≈ $0.33 |
| Thumbn Plus | $20/mo | 50 images a month | ≈ $0.40 |
| Thumbnailr, $10 pack | $10 once | 25 credits; 1 per thumbnail | ≈ $0.40 |
vidIQ's AI credits are shared with its other AI tools (coach, clipping, scripts), so the thumbnail count assumes you spend them on thumbnails only. A BYSO run also includes 7 titles, a description and tags for the video; its single-thumbnail generator costs 2 credits (≈ $0.17–0.20).
At full use, the spread is small: roughly ten to forty cents a thumbnail. If you publish every day and make several variants per video, any of the high-volume plans is a fair deal.
02Price per thumbnail if you make 10 a month
Most channels don't publish every day. Two videos a week with a couple of variants each is about ten thumbnails a month. A subscription costs the same whether you use 10 or 150, so here is the same list at that volume — lowest paid plan of each tool:
| Tool and plan | You pay a month | Per thumbnail at 10/month |
|---|---|---|
| BYSO (pay as you go) | ≈ $1.70–2.00 | ≈ $0.17–0.20 |
| Thumbnailr (pay as you go) | ≈ $4.00 | ≈ $0.40 |
| vidIQ Boost (billed $199 yearly) | $16.58 | ≈ $1.66 |
| Thumbfa.st Pro | $19 | ≈ $1.90 |
| Thumbn Plus | $20 | ≈ $2.00 |
| Pikzels Premium (billed $336 yearly) | $28 | ≈ $2.80 |
That is the real difference between the models: at low volume a subscription costs four to ten times more per thumbnail than paying per use. BYSO credits don't reset at the end of the month, so a $5 pack lasts until you use it.
Rule of thumb: divide the monthly price by the number of thumbnails you actually made last month, not by the plan's limit. If the result is over a dollar, a pay-as-you-go tool or a free tier will save you money.
03Free tiers
- Thumbfa.st: 5 thumbnails a month, Gemini model only, with a watermark.
- Thumbnailr: 5 credits once on sign-up, no card.
- vidIQ: 150 AI credits a month — about 6 thumbnail generations if you spend them on nothing else.
- Thumbn: 2 images a month.
- BYSO: 10 credits once on sign-up — 2 full runs, so 6 thumbnails plus titles, descriptions and tags — and 3 SEO runs without signing up. No card.
- Pikzels: a free trial; the pricing page doesn't state its length or credits.
04What you get for the money is not the same
A cheaper thumbnail is not automatically a better deal. The tools start from different inputs and do different extra work:
- vidIQ is a full YouTube growth suite: keyword research, competitor tracking, an AI coach, trend research. The thumbnail generator is one feature among many, and the credits are shared between them.
- Pikzels is thumbnail-focused, with persona training (your face) and style training for a consistent look across a channel.
- Thumbfa.st is built for volume: generate several at once, keep persons and inspirations, choose Gemini or OpenAI models on paid plans. A $199 lifetime plan exists if you bring your own API keys.
- Thumbn starts from your video title: it makes a draft, refines it with follow-up prompts and can reuse uploaded people to keep a face consistent.
- Thumbnailr sells credit packs with no subscription and can take a YouTube link as a style reference — you still describe the shot.
- BYSO starts from the video, not a prompt: paste a YouTube, Shorts or Instagram Reels link, or upload the file (up to 500 MB, so before it's public). It reads what the video is about and returns 3 thumbnails in different styles — with your face if you add photos, 9:16 for Shorts — together with 7 titles, a description and tags, in 8 languages. The thumbnails are drawn by Google Gemini (Nano Banana) and OpenAI GPT Image on every pack, free credits included, and there is no prompt to write: one link, one button, about a minute.
Where BYSO does less. No persona or style training — you upload a few photos each time. No A/B testing or upload to YouTube from inside the tool. And BYSO is in alpha: we ship changes almost daily, so expect the occasional rough edge.
05Not in the tables
Canva and TubeBuddy both offer AI help with thumbnails, but neither publishes a price per thumbnail: Canva's AI image tools run on usage limits inside its plans, and TubeBuddy's thumbnail tools are part of its subscription tiers. Both are good choices if you already pay for them for other reasons — a generator is not the main thing you're buying there.
06Which one to pick
- Publishing daily, many variants per video: Thumbfa.st Pro or Ultra, or vidIQ Max if you also want its research tools.
- One consistent face and style across a channel: Pikzels.
- You already use vidIQ for keywords: its Boost plan covers about 90 thumbnail generations a month.
- One or two videos a week, or you just want the whole upload done from the video: BYSO — about $0.50 per video for 3 thumbnails plus titles, description and tags, no subscription.
Paste a YouTube link or upload your video — get 3 thumbnails, 7 titles, a description and tags in about a minute. 10 free credits on sign-up, no card.

How much does one AI YouTube thumbnail cost?
On subscription tools, about $0.10–0.40 per thumbnail if you use the whole monthly allowance (Thumbfa.st Ultra ≈ $0.10, vidIQ Max ≈ $0.14, Pikzels Premium $0.19–0.37, Thumbn Pro ≈ $0.33). At around 10 thumbnails a month the same subscriptions work out to $1.66–2.80 per thumbnail. Pay-as-you-go BYSO is about $0.15–0.20 at any volume.
Which AI thumbnail generator has no subscription?
BYSO sells credit packs from $5, and credits don't reset at the end of the month. One run makes 3 thumbnails plus titles, description and tags for 5 credits (≈ $0.50). Thumbnailr also sells packs with no subscription: $10 for 25 thumbnails (≈ $0.40 each), and its credits don't expire. Thumbfa.st also has a one-time $199 lifetime plan, but you supply your own AI API keys and pay the model provider separately.
What is the cheapest option for a small channel?
At around 10 thumbnails a month, pay-as-you-go: about $1.70–2.00 a month on BYSO against $16.58–28 for the lowest paid plans of vidIQ, Thumbfa.st, Thumbn or Pikzels. Free tiers also help: Thumbfa.st 5 a month with a watermark, vidIQ about 6 generations, Thumbn 2 images, BYSO 10 credits once.
Which tool makes a thumbnail from a YouTube video link?
BYSO takes a YouTube, Shorts or Instagram Reels link, or an uploaded file, and returns 3 thumbnails with 7 titles, a description and tags. Thumbnailr can use a YouTube link as a style reference, but you still describe the shot. Most other generators start from a text prompt.
Is a "credit" the same in every tool?
No. vidIQ charges 22 credits per generation, regeneration or edit; Pikzels 10–20 credits per thumbnail; Thumbfa.st and Thumbn count thumbnails or images directly; BYSO charges 5 credits per run of 3 thumbnails, or 2 for a single thumbnail from a prompt.
