YouTube Dynamic Thumbnails: 3 Covers, Different Audiences
Announced 23 Sep 2026At Made on YouTube, YouTube introduced dynamic thumbnails: you give a video up to three thumbnails, and YouTube recommends the best of the three to different segments of your audience — instead of choosing one image for everybody.
For two years the question was "which of my three thumbnails wins?" Dynamic thumbnails change the question to "which of my three thumbnails wins for whom?" That sounds like a small tweak. It changes how you should design the three.
01What changes compared with Test & Compare
Test & Compare launched in 2024. According to YouTube, creators have run more than 40 million experiments with it since. It works like a classic A/B test: up to three thumbnails, an experiment, then one winner that everyone sees from then on.
| Test & Compare (2024) | Dynamic thumbnails (2026) | |
|---|---|---|
| Options | Up to 3 | Up to 3 |
| Result | One winner for everyone | All three stay live |
| Who sees what | Everyone sees the winner | Each segment sees the option that suits it |
| Losing options | Discarded | Still shown to the audience they work for |
The practical consequence: under Test & Compare, a thumbnail that worked brilliantly for a third of your viewers but lost overall was thrown away. Under dynamic thumbnails, that third still gets to see it.
02How to design the three — the part that actually changes
With a single winner, three near-identical versions (same photo, three background colours) were a reasonable way to fine-tune. With audience matching, near-identical options give the system nothing to match — every segment would react to them the same way.
Make three different promises, not three colour schemes. Each option should appeal to a different kind of viewer. This is our reading of how a segment-matching system can be useful, not something YouTube has spelled out.
One way to split them that works for most videos:
- The person. A face with a clear emotion — for viewers who come for you, your subscribers and returning audience.
- The result. The thing the video is about: the finished build, the before/after, the location, the product. For viewers who come for the topic and don't know you yet.
- The promise. A bold 2–4 word claim or question. For viewers who decide by curiosity, and for small screens where a face alone reads poorly.
Keep the title constant across all three in your head: each thumbnail should still match what the video delivers. A thumbnail that wins clicks from one segment and then loses them in the first ten seconds is not a win — YouTube's systems look at what happens after the click too.
03What YouTube has not said yet
The announcement is short, and several things creators will want to know are missing. We would rather list them than guess:
- Shorts. Not mentioned. Test & Compare has never supported Shorts thumbnails, so treat dynamic thumbnails as a long-form feature until YouTube says otherwise.
- How segments are defined. YouTube says "different segments of your audience" and nothing more — not whether that means subscribers vs new viewers, countries, devices or interests.
- What reporting you get. Whether Studio shows which thumbnail each segment received, and how each performed, is not described.
- Who has it and when. No eligibility rules or rollout schedule were published with the announcement. If you do not see it yet, look where Test & Compare lives in your video's details in Studio.
Watch out for confident guides. Within days of the announcement, articles appeared explaining exactly how dynamic thumbnails segment audiences. None of that is in YouTube's post. If a guide tells you how the matching works, ask where it got that.
04Ask Studio will now refresh old thumbnails
The same announcement expanded Ask Studio, YouTube's AI assistant inside Studio. Two thumbnail-related abilities matter here:
- It can generate thumbnails that match your channel's style.
- It can run in the background on your older videos, suggesting and testing refreshed thumbnails — YouTube frames this as helping classic content reach new audiences.
That second point is the quiet one. Your back catalogue is about to get thumbnail experiments whether you design them or not. It is worth deciding which old videos deserve a hand-made refresh before an automatic one arrives.
05Coming next: A/B testing the video itself
YouTube also said that video A/B testing is coming soon: you will be able to test up to three cuts of a video to see which hook performs best. Thumbnails and the first seconds of the video are two halves of the same decision — soon both can be tested.

What are dynamic thumbnails on YouTube?
A YouTube Studio feature announced on 23 September 2026. You provide up to three thumbnails for a video and YouTube recommends the best of the three to different segments of your audience, instead of showing one image to everybody.
How are dynamic thumbnails different from Test & Compare?
Test & Compare, launched in 2024, runs an experiment and then picks a single winning thumbnail that everyone sees. Dynamic thumbnails keep all three options live and match each one to the audience segment it works best for.
Do dynamic thumbnails work for Shorts?
YouTube's announcement does not mention Shorts. Test & Compare has never supported Shorts, so assume dynamic thumbnails are for long-form videos until YouTube says otherwise.
How should I design three thumbnails for dynamic thumbnails?
Make them genuinely different angles on the same video, not three colour variants of one design. For example: a face with a strong reaction, the result or object the video is about, and a bold text promise. The system can only match different audiences if the options appeal to different people.
What else did YouTube announce about thumbnails?
Ask Studio can generate thumbnails that match your channel's style and can run in the background on older videos, suggesting and testing refreshed thumbnails. YouTube also said video A/B testing of up to three cuts, to compare hooks, is coming soon.
