Free YouTube Tools for Creators: What to Check Before and After You Publish
Most “free YouTube tools” lists are a wall of logos. This one is organised by the moment you need the tool: the hour before you hit Publish, the days after, and the research in between. Every tool here runs in the browser, most need no sign-up, and the few that cost credits say so up front.
Disclosure: these are BYSO’s own tools — we built them because we kept doing these checks by hand. They’re in alpha, so if something misbehaves, tell us.

02Before you publish
Thumbnail Preview — will it stand out in the feed?
A thumbnail that looks great full-screen can disappear at 168 pixels wide in the sidebar. Upload your image, type the title and a search phrase for your topic, and see it in a mock YouTube feed next to real videos for that search — desktop, mobile and sidebar sizes. If yours isn’t the first thing your eye lands on, change it now, not after 1,000 impressions.
Video SEO Checker — anything missing?
Paste a link to a public or unlisted video. The checker goes through what YouTube itself documents: title length, description, chapters, tags, hashtags, thumbnail, captions. It lists concrete fixes and doesn’t invent a “score out of 100”, because YouTube doesn’t publish one.
Tag Extractor — what do similar videos use?
Paste any public video and see its real tags, copy them in one click and check them against YouTube’s 500-character limit. Tags matter less than titles and thumbnails — we measured 908 popular videos — but they still help with misspellings and related searches.
Need the whole package? Titles, description, tags and 3 thumbnails from the video
The main BYSO tool does all of the above from the video itself: paste a YouTube link or upload the file and get 7 titles, a description, tags from real search suggestions, chapters and 3 thumbnails drawn by Google Gemini (Nano Banana) and OpenAI GPT Image. A full run is 5 credits, SEO only 1 credit, and you can try SEO without signing up.
Paste your next video’s link and see what BYSO suggests — titles, description and tags in about a minute.

Comment Analyzer — what are viewers actually asking?
YouTube Studio shows you comments one by one. The analyzer reads every comment under a video — not just the first 100 — and sums them up: the main themes, the mood, the questions viewers keep asking, criticism, and ideas for the next video. It works on any public video, so you can run it on a competitor’s hit to see what their audience still wants. Free for videos with up to 1,000 comments; beyond that, 1 credit per 5,000.
Timestamp Generator — chapters without scrubbing
Paste a link and get chapter timestamps you can drop straight into the description. Chapters help viewers jump to what they came for and can show up as key moments in Google. From a YouTube link it’s free up to 5 times a day without signing up; signed-in accounts get 3 free runs, then 1 credit per run from a link or per 30 minutes of an uploaded file.
Subtitle Translator — reach viewers in other languages
Upload a video or paste a link, and the translator transcribes it and translates whole sentences with context, so slang and tone survive and the timing stays in sync. You get an SRT file ready for YouTube Studio. 1 credit per 10 minutes of video.
04Research and reuse
Transcript Downloader — read a video in two minutes
Get the full text of any public video — plain, with timestamps, or as SRT/VTT — plus a free AI summary. Useful for research, quoting, or turning your own video into a blog post. Asking the AI a specific question about the video costs 1 credit.
Thumbnail Downloader — keep a swipe file
Save any video’s thumbnail in full resolution (up to 1280×720). Collecting the thumbnails that win in your niche is the fastest way to see patterns: faces, colours, how many words.
AI Thumbnail Generator and Reformatter — when you need an image fast
Describe the thumbnail, add a photo of yourself and pick 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1 — 2 credits. Already have a thumbnail? The reformatter rebuilds it as a Shorts cover or a square community post instead of cropping it — 1 credit.
05A 10-minute routine for every upload
- Before uploading: run your thumbnail through Thumbnail Preview against 3–4 competitors.
- Right after uploading as Unlisted: run the Video SEO Checker and fix what it flags; add chapters from the Timestamp Generator.
- 48 hours after going public: run the Comment Analyzer and note the top questions — that’s your next video list.
- Once a month: download thumbnails from the best videos in your niche and compare them with yours.
06Questions
Are these YouTube tools really free?
Six of the ten are free without signing up: Thumbnail Preview, Video SEO Checker, Tag Extractor, Thumbnail Downloader, Transcript Downloader with summary, and the Comment Analyzer for videos with up to 1,000 comments. Timestamps from a YouTube link are free up to 5 times a day. The rest cost credits (1 credit ≈ $0.10), and new accounts get 10 free credits.
Do I need to install anything or connect my channel?
No. Everything runs in the browser from a video link or a file. None of the tools ask for access to your YouTube account.
Can I use them on other people’s videos?
Yes, on any public video — that’s the point of the Tag Extractor, Comment Analyzer and Transcript Downloader for research. Use what you learn to make your own video, not to re-upload theirs.
How do I see how my thumbnail looks before publishing?
Upload it to the free Thumbnail Preview with your title and a search phrase. It places your thumbnail in a mock YouTube feed next to real videos for that search, at desktop, mobile and sidebar sizes.
What’s the fastest way to find video ideas from comments?
Run the Comment Analyzer on your own recent video or a competitor’s popular one. It reads all the comments and lists the questions viewers keep asking and the topics they want next.
