YouTube Chapters Not Showing? Every Cause, Fixed

5 November 2026 · 6 min read · BYSO Team

Start here: YouTube never tells you why chapters failed. If one rule is broken, it quietly ignores the whole list. Check the four official rules first: the list starts at 0:00, has at least three timestamps, goes in ascending order, and every chapter lasts at least 10 seconds. Those four cover most cases. The rest of this guide covers what's left.

1The first timestamp isn't 0:00

This is the most common mistake. People start the list with the first interesting moment, like 0:45 The test, and skip the intro. YouTube's help page is explicit that the first timestamp must start at 00:00, and anything else invalidates the list.

Fix: add a first line at 0:00, even if it's just "Intro". Both 0:00 and 00:00 are accepted.

2Fewer than three timestamps

Two chapters aren't enough. YouTube requires at least three timestamps, and 0:00 counts as one of them. A short video with an intro and one main part needs a third marker, for example for the ending.

3A chapter is shorter than 10 seconds

Every chapter must last at least 10 seconds. That's measured from one timestamp to the next, so two markers 8 seconds apart break the list, even if everything else is perfect. The last chapter runs to the end of the video, so make sure it's at least 10 seconds too.

Fix: merge very short segments into their neighbour. Ten seconds is a minimum, not a target: chapters under half a minute rarely help viewers anyway.

4Timestamps out of order or past the end

The list must go in ascending order. This usually breaks after re-editing: you cut two minutes from the video, but the old timestamps stay in the description, and the last one now points past the end. Re-check every timestamp after any edit to the video.

5Formatting that looks right but isn't

This one isn't in YouTube's documentation, but it's a frequent cause when a list "obviously" follows the rules. Each timestamp should sit at the start of its own line. Problems tend to come from text pasted from a document or an AI chat:

Fix: retype the list by hand in the description box, or paste it as plain text, and delete everything before each timestamp.

6The timestamps are in a comment, not the description

Timestamps in a comment, even a pinned one, become clickable links, so it looks like they work. But YouTube builds chapters only from the video's own description. To get the chapter bar under the player, the list has to be in the description.

7Your channel has an active strike, or the video is flagged

This is the cause people rarely check. YouTube's help page lists conditions where chapters are switched off entirely, no matter how good the list is:

ConditionWhat YouTube says
Active strike on the channelThe chapters feature isn't available while the channel has any active strikes
Content flagged as possibly inappropriateChapters aren't available for content that may be inappropriate for some viewers
No access to advanced featuresChapters require advanced features; you can apply for access if you don't have it

Fix: open YouTube Studio → Settings → Channel → Feature eligibility to see whether advanced features are on. Active strikes are shown in YouTube Studio as well. If a strike is the cause, chapters come back when it expires.

8It's a Short

The Shorts player has no chapter bar, so timestamps in a Short's description don't produce chapters. If you want chapters, the video needs to be a regular long-form upload.

9You're confusing automatic and manual chapters

YouTube Studio has an "Allow automatic chapters" checkbox, on by default for new uploads. It only controls the chapters YouTube generates itself. Your own timestamps in the description work either way, and when they're valid, they replace the automatic ones for that video.

Note what YouTube says about the automatic kind: not every video is eligible, and even eligible videos may not get them. If you're waiting for automatic chapters that never appeared, writing your own list is the only reliable route.

10You fixed it, but they still don't show

YouTube doesn't say how quickly chapters appear after you save the description. Your phone's app and your browser can also show a cached version of the video page. Before you assume it's still broken, check in a private window or on another device, and give it a little time.

Skip the manual work: paste a YouTube link or upload a file, and BYSO listens to the video and writes a chapter list that starts at 0:00 and splits it where the topic actually changes.

FAQ

Why are my YouTube chapters not showing?

Usually the list breaks one of the four rules: it must start at 0:00, have at least three timestamps, go in ascending order, and keep every chapter at 10 seconds or longer. If the list is correct, check for active strikes and access to advanced features.

Do timestamps in a comment create chapters?

No. They're clickable, but chapters come only from the video's own description.

Does a channel strike remove chapters?

Yes. YouTube says chapters aren't available while the channel has any active strikes.

Do manual chapters override automatic ones?

Yes. Valid timestamps in the description replace YouTube's automatic chapters for that video.

Can Shorts have chapters?

In practice, no. The Shorts player has no chapter bar.
