YouTube Shorts Series: Seasons, Episodes & Thumbnails

29 September 2026 · 6 min read · BYSO Team

Announced 23 Sep 2026YouTube introduced Shorts series: you can organise Shorts into seasons and episodes, give them custom thumbnails, and viewers get sequential playback — the next episode, not a random Short. Rolling out to creators across web, mobile and TV.

Until now, a story told in Shorts fell apart the moment it left your channel page: part 3 could reach someone who never saw part 1, and the feed would move them on to something unrelated. A series keeps the parts together and plays them in order.

YouTube's reason is not subtle. It says microdramas passed 6.5 billion views in the first half of 2026, with watch time up more than 50% year on year — and TV views of that content up more than 90%.

01The rules a series has to follow

Shorts series are built on YouTube's existing Shows feature, and the Shows help page sets the constraints:

RuleWhat YouTube requires
Content of the playlistOnly Shorts — no long-form videos mixed in
ShapePortrait or square
LengthUp to 180 seconds per Short
ConnectionSame characters or hosts, one long story, or one topic
PresentationSame intro, same style of thumbnails, same format

That fifth line matters for anyone designing covers: YouTube explicitly lists a consistent thumbnail style as part of what makes a collection a show. It also notes that videos with no visuals are unlikely to be treated as one.

On eligibility, sources differ slightly. YouTube's post says Shorts series are rolling out to creators; TechCrunch reports the rollout is to Partner Program creators. The Shows help page itself does not list a subscriber or Partner Program threshold.

02Setting one up in Studio

There are two routes, both in YouTube Studio:

  1. Turn an existing playlist into a show. Content → Playlists → open the playlist's options → add show features. Useful if you already group your Shorts parts in a playlist.
  2. Create a new show from the Create menu, then add the Shorts you want.

Two details that save confusion later:

03Artwork: the series is 16:9, the episodes are 9:16

This is the part most coverage skips, and it is where people will export the wrong size. A series has two kinds of images:

ImageWhat it isSpec
BannerPoster art with a stylised title or logo16:9, JPG/PNG, up to 10 MB
BackdropThe same art without the title — used behind the show on browse surfaces16:9, JPG/PNG, up to 10 MB
Episode thumbnailA unique custom thumbnail for each Short in the seriesVertical 9:16, as for any Short

A typo in YouTube's own help page. For the 16:9 banner and backdrop, the help page lists "3840x2160 pixels or a minimum of 1080x1920 pixels". 1080×1920 is a vertical 9:16 size — it cannot be the minimum for a 16:9 image. It is almost certainly meant to be 1920×1080. Design both at 3840×2160 and the question never comes up.

Note also the difference between banner and backdrop: the backdrop must not contain the title, because YouTube places its own interface over it. Make the banner first, then save a copy with the lettering removed.

04Designing episode covers that read as one series

Custom thumbnails per episode are the headline feature for Shorts, where until July 2026 you could only pick a frame. A series turns that into a design system. What works:

Making episode covers? Use the same photo and change only the text — "Part 1", "Part 2", "Part 3" — and you get a consistent set in vertical 9:16. The 16:9 banner can be made in the same tool.

05Questions

What are Shorts series on YouTube?

A way to package Shorts into seasons and episodes, announced on 23 September 2026. Viewers watch the episodes in order as one continuous story instead of swiping past unrelated clips. Series support custom thumbnails and sequential playback, on web, mobile and TV.

Who can create a Shorts series?

YouTube says Shorts series are rolling out to creators; press coverage specifies Partner Program creators. The underlying Shows feature in YouTube Studio does not list a subscriber or Partner Program requirement, but it expects a clear connection between episodes.

Which Shorts can go into a series?

The playlist behind the series must contain only Shorts. Each video must be portrait or square and at most 180 seconds long.

Can each episode of a Shorts series have its own thumbnail?

Yes. YouTube's help page says that for Shorts series you can upload a unique custom thumbnail for each individual Short in the series.

What artwork does a series need?

Two 16:9 images: a banner (poster art with a stylised title or logo) and a backdrop (the same art without the title). YouTube lists 3840×2160 pixels, JPG or PNG, up to 10 MB.

How do I create a Shorts series in YouTube Studio?

In YouTube Studio open Content, then either convert an existing playlist of Shorts into a show from the playlist's options, or create a new show from the Create menu. Season 1 is applied by default; episode numbers follow publish date unless you reorder them.
